Dear  Visitor,
Thank you for reading our Newsletter!

We learned a lot from our last newsletter, specfically, everyone seems to want more information about the kids! The first newsletter was really meant as a way for Tenzin to reconnect with everyone who has volunteered and or visited JCWSS. Yes, we did mention our need for funding - which some were bothered by - but that is the reality of running the orphanage and school and paying our employees as well as the loans to the bank. However, the overwhelming response from most everyone was one of approval. Tenzin said, "I appreciate all the comments and emails people have sent my way and look forward to staying in touch with everyone."  For now, lets get back to the kids and the school, and if you'll indulge me, Brian, ~ the pleas for additional funding through donations ~ will  remain.
We'd also like to welcome our new readers who have signed up to receive the Jatson Chumig School  Newsletter!

My Life at Jatson Chumig - by: TASHI YANGZOM
Tenzin: "We do not know who Tashi's parents are, but we do know a small amout of information about her following her birth. Shortly after being born, Tashi was buried in the earth under a tree at the back side of the Sera Monastery in Lhasa. During this time, a monk who was looking for his lost cow, saw some dogs digging under a tree. The monk went to the tree and looked closely and saw a baby wrapped in a plastic bag and he brought this baby to a family where there is ten children. This family looked after Tashi for seven years and then this family brought Tashi to Jatson Chumig on August 10, 1998. After Tashi finished her six years of primary school education at Jatson Chumig, she now attends a middle school in Lhasa. Tashi is ranked fifth in her class at this middle school in Lhasa and she is now doing very well."

The following story appeared in the Lhasa Newspaper at our request for Tashi's story:
[Note: This story has been translated from Chinese to Tibetan to English]

Tashi: "Hello, my name is Tashi Yangzom and I am 16 years old. I have been a Jatson Chumig student for 9 years. I first came here in 1998 and I remember the old school and what everything was like. I remember the old kitchen and where we used to eat our food. Things are much better now. Now we have cleaner place and things are better.

Tashi1Tashi2I have grown a lot and am much bigger since I first come to Jatson Chumig. They took photos of me when I came to Jatson Chumig in 1998 and I have pictures of today, I am much bigger now.  Today I am in middle school and that means that I sleep at Jatson Chumig but leave every morning to go to school. I attend middle school and I am very good in my class because I won an award. I work hard in school and do real good.  There is a lot of work at the school and we go to classes all day six days a week. This school is a Chinese middle school and most of the kids are Chinese, but some of my Tibetan friends are here too and I am friends with all the kids from Jatson Chumig. I like all the kids in my school, it does not matter to me if they are Chinese or Tibetan, they are my friends. I remember when we used to play at Jatson Chumig, now there is not as much time for play because school is what I do. All my classes are taught in Chinese, like at Jatson Chumig, except we are not taught Tibetan anymore. Sometimes on Sunday, Headmaster Jampa sits with us and tells us stories, I love hearing his stories. We listen to him carefully as he is like a father to all of us and it is he who makes it possible for us to be here and to go to school. My hours at school are long and then we have much homework every night. I spend almost all my time studying for school and there is no time to play anymore. Maybe that is because I am 16 years old and I am not a little anymore."

Volume 1, Issue 1 ... Results

Results of our First Newsletter Mailed on September 18, 2007

Sent     Bounces     Spam    Opt-Outs   Opened          Survey
88         5  (6%)         0            0             59 (71%)           6 (7%)

The above numbers show that 88 people were mailed the first JCWSS newsletter; we were missing 12 people's email and home addresses. Five were bounced back because of undeliverable email addresses (they were mailed a hard-copy). Nobody reported it as Spam and Nobody opted out of receiving future emails. The great news is that out of the 83 people who received it, 59 people OPENED the newsletter and read it. That's an outstanding 71% compared to the average open rate of 37%.*  [*Constant Contact data shows our results compared to the average results of all customers who send electronic newsletters.]

Thank you everyone for showing such a great interest, you accomplished that simply by opening, and reading the newsletter. We learned a lot of information from those who answered the survey, although only 6 people responded. We value your suggestions and are implementing your ideas but have decided to drop the survey in future newsletters. If we continue to include a survey the price rises an additional $180. (The first newsletter Constant Contact throws in a free survey hoping you buy a bigger contract). This is a significant increase is too much to continue.  Please continue to respond to this and future newsletters by emailing Tenzin at
jatson4@yahoo.com or Brian at brian@jatsontibet.org.We hope you continue sending your thoughts and ideas as we try to expand our base. Note:  [the cost of Constant Contact has been donated].

Although we are not continuing the survey (because of costs) we are hoping your emails and ideas will continue. We have heard you and will continue to write stories about the students and from the students. We will continue to update our wish list and we look forward to stories FROM VOLUNTEERS who have been at Jatson Chumig to share their experiences. There are now many more people who have signed up to receive this newsletter (the First Edition was mailed to volunteers only) ... We hope to reach out to many more people and you can help ... Please forward this newsletter on to a few friends --- Together, we can all Pay it Forward. [The Forward Email Link is at the bottom of this newsletter]. Forwarding ... it's our best way of reaching others.

Donation Results:
Since the launch of the new JCWSS Web Site and the Constant Contact Newsletter mailed September 18, Jatson Chumig has increased its revenue by $1,140 USD.  Imagine the outcome when we all decide to make a difference?  If you are thinking about where to make your end-of-year charitable contribution, please consider Jatson Chumig School.

Many thanks to the students from Fay School and Bancroft School in Massachusetts, USA, for their incredible support in raising funds, items and awareness for JCWSS.

Jatson Chumig has an important mission. We should continue to read and help spread their story along with having our fond memories, but also stay involved ...
The Children Need Our Help ... Thank You.
Please continue sending me your ideas and/or comments.
Hopefully, we've found a new way to stay connected.

Thanks ... Tenzin
