What Jatson Provides

Along with education and job training, Jatson Chumig Welfare Special School gives each child a place to call home. The school provides the children with three meals a day, a warm bed, clothing, schooling, school books and supplies, dorm mothers, paid teachers, and a nurturing atmosphere.

Until now, the school has been financed by the sales of its handicraft products. Our Lhasa Handicraft Center employs many graduates, and through these handicraft sales we have been able to cover the costs of dormitories, classrooms, and the educational expenses of the children, the school, and the handicraft center.

Selection of Students

The school accepts orphaned, physically challenged and poor children between the ages of 4 to 7 years old. They are educated by the school through Grade 6. As the school is recognized by the government, the students can then enter the junior board exam and according to their result, begin the middle school and high school years of education. Students who score well enough on examinations even have the opportunity to attend Universities either in Mainland China at Tibet University, here in Lhasa.

From the State Education Council, orphaned and disabled children are given special preference. However, the students fees for higher education are paid for by our own school. In case any student fails to score high enough in the exam, or are disqualified due to an age problem, then they are encouraged to continue their vocational schooling at our handicraft workshops and are taught Tibetan craftsmanship so that they earn a living with that skill in the future. Until now, the school has not collected a single penny from any of the students or their families, the expenditures are all paid by the school.

Objectives of the School

In today's world, the poor, handicapped and orphaned are looked down upon and neglected by society. Even though they have the will to do something, society has put many unseen hurdles in front of them that compels them to stay in their own shell. So, with good intentions we founded this school to help them flourish. The following are some of the main objectives of our school:

  1. To make the students capable of doing things on their own, so that they won't be bullied by others and can live their life happily.
  2. To give a standard of education equal to other children and also teach them traditional handicrafts and skills, so that they can stand on their own feet in the future.
  3. The government and the public has constantly taken great interest in improving the traditional skill and handicraft.
  4. Later the graduates students can return to their villages and help their fellow members, and also help the villagers in increasing their standard of living and lessen the gap between city and village.

Source of Income

  1. One of the main sources of income is from our own handicraft factory. The main aim of this factory is to flourish the declined skill and improve the existing ones. As the main emphasis is laid on quality, the quality of all the products are very high. The net profits from these products are used for the school expenditure and development. As the inflow of money is low, development has not been widespread.
  2. The state has given an allowance for each student, and part of all rickshaw fares (which are owned and operated by Jatson Chumig) are given. [We currently have 17 licensed rickshaws].
  3. The other main source of income is from the donations given by different organizations and individuals from around the world. Generous BENEFACTORS make it possible for Jatson Chumig to continue its mission of helping Tibetan children obtain a better life for themselves, which includes an education, job skills and a lifetime of love which each child receives.
