Lhasa Jatson Chumig
Welfare Special School Newsletter
October, 2008
Volume: 2 Issue: 7
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
I've just returned back to the USA from a month long visit to Jatson, and having been the first volunteer/visitor in the past six months, I wanted to give everyone an update, as this was by far, my best visit ever. Even with so many changes (within Tibet), the kids and staff go on as they have for over 16 years now, with smiles on their faces, goodness in their hearts, and a love of life like no other I've ever seen. This issue will briefly cover what was accomplished during my visit as well as lay out a plan for the future of the children who call Jatson Chumig ~ home.
Peace!
New Jatson Uniforms:
===============
After meeting Tenzin in Shanghai, we traveled to Chengdu where we visited some school uniform manufacturers and spent time selecting the summer and winter uniforms. These uniforms are generously being donated by the Collette Foundation. Tenzin is really happy about the types of uniforms selected because of their durability and warmth. Although the uniforms have been delayed, they should all arrive before the winter months set in and we'll beat the cold which lies ahead. Many thanks to Collette Foundation for their donation and kindness. Not only will the kids look great, but they will be wearing clean, warm uniforms. Our next issue will include a photo spread of all types of uniforms, especially the quilted, lined winter uniform that every student will be wearing for the winter months.
The Backpacks Arrive:
===============
I was fortunate enough to be at Jatson for the conclusion of a project which began in January, '08 when St. Peter-Marian High School in Worcester, Massachusetts USA began what became known as a Backpack of Love for every student at Jatson. In September, many large boxes began arriving on a daily basis, and each box contained about 5 or 6 backpacks! I was there to see the magic, and as soon the backpacks for an entire class arrived, we distributed them to the children. Each grade filled with anticipation for when their turn would come. With the Chinese National Holiday Week in October, all middle schools and high schools were closed. All the Jatson Children returned back to Jatson where each class had its special day and every child was given a backpack filled to the top with clothing, toys, crayons, books, teddy bears, games, balls, soap, toothbrushes & paste and so much more! The high school students were just as happy, maybe even more so, than the younger ones as cool clothing versus toys seemed to make their day. Thank you SPM for your 10 months of work and passion which have given these children more than they could ever imagine. All of this has been captured on video and will be available for everyone to see from our web site.
New Solar Hot Water Heaters:
====================
A project started by a volunteer (Leticia) last January, was to replace the old and broken solar hot water heaters which stand on top of each dormitory. For the first time ever, the children now have hot showers. Hot and cold water now flow and the house mothers all thanked me because the children are so happy.
Again, I just happened to be the one who was there to supervise the installation and film it all, but the true 'heros' are Leticia and a group of her friends from the San Francisco Bay Area who held the first ever International Fundraiser -
A Night in Tibet
- and raised the funding to buy and install these units. Also many thanks to other people such as Maria from the Netherlands and supporters from around the world who supported this project and have created a cleaner and healthier environment for all Jatson children. These photos prove that wishes do come true as these items were on the
JatsonTibet.org
Wish List and now stand atop three dormitories in Lhasa Tibet providing hot showers for the children.
The Jatson Movie:
==========
We're creating a documentary! The only thing difficult about being at Jatson for one full month is having to leave when your time is up. I came to know the children in so many more ways than just the English Teacher. Hopefully, the film being created will give everyone (especially those who have never been to Lhasa and to Jatson Chumig) a sense of what it's actually like being there and living there.
We gathered each weekend for a night at the movies, and because I brought with me a mini data projector, we were able to create a movie theatre in the cafeteria and have movies projected on a big white sheet and everyone laughed and enjoyed the shows. From seeing Jackie Chan to Charlotte's Web, Transformers to Cliffhanger, Himalaya and so many more, the kids loved seeing and hearing these movies blasted on a set of speakers and listening in various langauges, along with subtitles --- the only thing missing (which I'll bring next time) was the popcorn!
Soon, the kids will be able to watch a movie and story about themselves and all the miracles that come from Jatson Chumig.
We've created a new website!
This new layout and presentation will include new photos of all students and lots of new videos, (the site is still under construction)
and we will always have the same address:
www.jatsontibet.org
Click back (we hope as often as possible) to see our new look.
We're always looking for feedback ... especially yours!
Toilets:
======
Sanitation is paramount and the best way to teach ... is to lead. So we choose a bright and beautiful Saturday morning and armed with rubber gloves, face masks, bottles of soap, sanitizer and most importantly, Clorox, I began a lesson (in front of the staff and students) on how one can transform a dirty toilet into one that is sparkling clean. A lot of elbow grease, scrubbing and time, changed one toilet into a sanitized area. Then the staff helped me clean the second one. By the time we worked our way across the courtyard and finally into the dorms, the kids themselves wanted in on making their areas as clean as possible.
Does this change the world ~ No.
Does this change the areas they call toilets ... Yes!
With continued cleaning, these areas will now remain much cleaner to use and decrease the chance of the children getting sick. This had to be done, some might think it's too disgusting to do, but the end result is sparkling clean toilets, with far less bacteria. It's a day I'll never forget, especially all the good that came out of a day's hard work from everyone's efforts!
Teaching - The Future & Beyond:
==========================
T E A C H I N G - With over 20 years of teaching experience, it's what I love most and working with the kids is the best part of being at Jatson Chumig. The Primary School consists of Grades 1 - 6 and teaching these children is what brought me to Lhasa in the first place but the end of the day and early evenings gave me the opportunity to help the middle school students and the high school students as well.
(Primary School Kids Shown Below)
The future is filled with promise ... help us to empower these children with the knowledge and education each receives at Jatson Chumig. Now, more than ever, make a commitment to the continued success of Jatson Chumig School & Orphanage.
World Economics 101:
==================
During my visit, the world also changed with the global economic downturn. We hope your heart remains open to supporting Jatson Chumig and the incredible program which exists for Tibetan handicapped orphaned children to change their lives through gaining knowledge as well as learning Tibetan handicrafts.
Yes, it takes an effort to make a contribution to Jatson Chumig.
Our success depends on everyone giving something
. The easiest way is to join one of the many monthly donation opportunities which are now available on our web site.
Ideally, we'd love to have every child have a sponsor, however even if you can't sponsor a student, everyone can give a monthly contribution. This is such an important project to support.
Suggested monthly contributions:
$50/month = Sponsorship: One full student sponsorship/one year
$30/month is $360/year: Pays a teacher's salary for almost three months
$10/month is $120/year: A house-mother's salary for two months
$5/month is $60/year: Five dollars a month : The payment plan is available!
Regardless of the global economic situation, there has to be at least one way for you to become involved and make a monthly/yearly difference ... If you really wanted to, you can! One of these options is less than two cups of tea or coffee per month. The most important thing is that you make a decision to become involved ~ today.
Since September 1st, the start of our new fiscal year, we've only had seven individuals make contributions to Jatson Chumig School & Orphanage, three of which are our raffle winners, and three others who have setup monthly contributions along with one very generous donation from our latest volunteer. We truly need the support of everyone who receives this newsletter, and more... Please try to become a
Jatson Benefactor
.
It'll be one decision you'll never regret and also one in which you'll know you've been a part of changing these children's lives ~~~ Many Thanks!
"Never doubt that a small group of caring citizens can change the world --- indeed, it's all that ever has." --- Margaret Mead
